London Wedding Photographer

Hello, I’m Ian!

Hi there! My name is Ian, and I truly love to tell people’s stories with a camera. I live in London with my little four-legged helper, Milo. I have a background in politics and public service, where I rose to the level of Assistant Director of a UK Government Department, however, my heart and soul has always been meant for the creative world. I always from a very young age had a camera around. I remember capturing my parents on a family holiday, perfectly framed and exposed at just 8 years old. And fondly remember my dad always recording every moment on his old analogue cam recorder. Those were the days! I guess my love for photography started around then, and it just grew and grew! I love to tell emotive and powerful stories about people and life with my camera. It I how I see the world and the important messages all around us.

My journey to this point…

I was born and raised between Surrey and London, with some time living abroad in Austria. Hence the love for mountains! I clearly have a sweet tooth as me and chocolate have a longterm relationship and I’m still trying to leave for a healthier life, although I am working out every day now and things are going good! I have a vary varied range of past experiences, at one time I ran a bar, lead a security team at the London 2012 Olympic Games, was a member of a Youth Council in London, trekked 150km across a desert aged 15, worked for 10 years in frontline UK and global politics meeting world leaders and advising on policy, won the Princess Diana Award and The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, registered a children’s charity which annually supports 4,000 children in a remote region of Kenya, was a guest at a Buckingham Palace Ceremony, as well as being hosted by Prince Harry and William (when they still spoke), established a profitable investment company, have featured in a 100+ million viewed music video, and drafted national UK Government policy on the design of new homes, just to mention a few things I’ve done so far in my life.

My interests outside of photography…

I’m a lover of travel, live music and nature. I have a soft spot for the likes of Swedish House Mafia, The Weeknd, Hans Zimmer and Raye to name a few. Although my musical taste are best described as eclectic, as I like some EDM, classical, rap, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, it really varies on the mood! I badly want to visit Cuba and Australia one day, although the list is long. So it would be an understatement to say I love to travel and explore the globe, hence I offer my services globally too. Italian, Icelandic, Ibiza, Alps weddings – just let me know when and where, and I’ll see you there! I speak basic German and a few other languages enough to say hello and thank you. I love Scandinavia and the Nordics, so Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland. I am totally in love with their ethos of minimalism and design. I sometimes wonder if I am secretly one of them. I have been so many times and you will always find be joining in the sauna, ice pool and snow rolling tradition. Haha! I love to hike up and ski down mountains, blame the inner Austrian.

Quick Fire get to know me

A few of my favourite things:

1. Drink of Choice – Hot Chocolate

Perhaps it’s my Austrian roots, but I have always fallen head over heels for a good hot chocolate. But at the after party, I’ll go for a classic gin and tonic.
2. In my spare time I am – Learning new skills and developing myself
Over the years I have grown more and more actively involved in the world of self-development and have a strong growth mindset. I always want to be the best version of myself I can, and this clearly comes out in my standards and values for my photography studio too.
3. Animal – Dog
Honestly I love most animals! But dogs have always been close to my heart. Having grown up around dogs, I love their loyalty and energy! They are such wonderful friends who are always there and so fun and hilarious to be around all the time!

Quick fire get to know me

A few more of my favourite things:

4. I’m known for – Traveling and Exploring
I’ve been fortunate to visit 31 countries and counting. I truly believe you learn so much from other people and cultures. It is a great adventure and the world is full of so many interesting and wonderful people.
5. Sport I’m know to like – Football
I say football as I am a Crystal Palace F.C. fan, but I workout daily and have previously played at the national level in hockey and fencing. I love watching and playing many sports. During my studying years, I used to take on a new sport every year, so I am what they call an ‘all-rounder’ haha!
6. Surprising things I’ve done – Trekked the Egyptian Desert, aged 15; and featured in a music video with other 100+ million views on Youtube.
Both are long stories but I used to like Example growing up, so I was invited to be on set for the filming of the music video for his hit song, “Change The Way You Kiss Me”. Aged 15, I was part of a group that trekked 150km in 55-degree temperatures across the Egyptian desert to raise funds and awareness of a children’s bereavement charity which helped me at a young age. Social issues have always been close to my heart!

My approach

There’s a very good reason why all of my past clients speak so highly of me, because I always go the extra mile to deliver the level of excellence I demand of my service. It simply isn’t enough to just be your wedding photographer, I am much more than that. I am your guide and support all the way up to and beyond your wedding day. From the first time we meet, I strive to be considered a long-lost friend rather than “the photographer” you hired. After all, Weddings are much more than transactional, they are about connection!
My process involves us getting to know each other on a more personal level, so I can listen to your unique story, and understand your unique needs, wants and values.
Having attended 30+ weddings in recent years, I know just how much of your time, energy, heart and soul goes into planning your wedding, and I certainly know how stressful it can be! But no need to stress, you have me and my experience to guide you and advise you along the journey! If I take you on as a client, you can totally tick ‘quality wedding photographer’ off your to do list with ease. Knowing that with my experience and skill, your wedding photos will perfectly tell the story of your day and of your deep love for one another. Then you can start to relax and prepare to have fun. Your wedding day will be full of so many emotions and you can stay present in every moment, with your loved ones and guests, just feeling the emotions whilst I work around you, capturing those memories, so you can relive them time and time again!
When you select your wedding photographer, you are buying into much more than just a service. This isn’t your everyday Netflix account, this is like the Harrods or Selfridges of wedding photography. Where values and standards are core to everything we do. My approach is guided by how I observe the world around me, this wonderful world full of so many emotions, connections, vibrancy and love. It drives me! It inspires me! And that of my work! I feel emotions deeply, and I bring this 6th sense into my photography. I notice subtle moments, and none so much as on the wedding day itself. I’m often sensing ‘a moment’ coming during the ceremony or at the crazy party late on into the night!
Leading up to your big day you will find me in OTT planning mode, as I am a strong believer in doing your research and planning ahead. But on the day itself, I will always follow my gut instinct and read the room. I do not stop working the whole day, even when I need to sit for some food, my mind is still working hard to find ways to get the best …………
When it comes to the wedding day I manage to get myself literally everywhere as I am super focused and all day long thinking how to get the best shots of your day, which tell the story as it unfolds.
I’ve always found, the best moments are the ones that naturally evolve, they are rarely staged and these are the moments I seek out throughout the day. I love to get in there and be close to the people and the action. The images I can create when I’m a few meters from the action make the moments feel so real and involving in the imagery I deliver. Capturing the life and soul of your wedding! The one which makes you feel intense and wonderful emotions.
Each day is totally unique, and this is why I like to follow my gut. The light, the location, the people, the details, the moments, the tears, the laughter, the speeches, each and every one is totally special and different to any other.
I am inspired by other creatives and by our incredible natural world around us. This is exactly why mountains feature in my branding. Because of my childhood memories of being up in the mountains all the time. Be that skiing down them or hiking up them. Nature holds a special place in my heart and is a great source of inspiration. I believe we should preserve and protect our natural world as much as possible. Which is why I have a whole page dedicated to Sustainability. I’m also deeply inspired by other loves in my life such as design, architecture, fashion, and film. I bring inspiration and ideas into my work from each of them.

My style

You may have found that lots of photographers out there label themselves as documentary and reportage, fine art, editorial, creative or natural light photographers. However, I am different! I don’t believe that my work care truly be described by a single label, besides who likes to be labelled and be told, you are ’this kind of person’ stay in your box. I believe my work has been influenced all of these fields. More than a label to my work, I believe that the feelings you feel from my work are far far more important! So there you go, I am a feelings or emotions photographer! I want you to fall in love again and again with my work and the moments captured within them! They are like art, they are documentary, they are editorial, they glow with stunning natural light – they are all of them!

INVEST IN THE VERY BEST

Knowledge & skill

I have spent years & invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment & world-class knowledge so that I can deliver an exceptional service & unbeatable value to you!

Knowledge is power & I have leared from the very best in the world! Here are just a few names of mentors, supporters, guides & friends I have admired & learned from so far along my journey…

GREG WILLIAMS

Greg is a living legend, an icon of film photography! And an ABSOLUTE hero of mine.

The official photographer for the British Academy of Film & Television Arts, the Golden Globes, the Oscars, Cannes & Venice Film Festivals, and the film set photographer for the James Bond franchise. There is barely a name in Hollywood or film for that matter that Greg does not know personally on a first-name basis.

Starting his career as a war photographer and over the past 10 years has become the most recognisable photographer in Hollywood, rubbing shoulders with all the film stars & attracting a following in his own right of millions across the planet.

I first met Greg at the privately held, invite-only launch of the new Leica Q3 in Mayfair, London back in 2023 (thank you again to my friends at Leica & Harrods for inviting me). It was a goosebumps moment for me & we hit it off instantly. Perhaps it was because we both shared a similar South London accent. It turns out he grew up not far from my grandparents. South London represent!

Over the last few years I’ve learned a huge amount from Greg about photography & how to work with a-list clients. Celebrities (or “talent” as they are known in the industry) take a certain set of skills, which turns out are not too dissimilar from working with political world leaders & politicians for over 14 years. Kinda handy that was my life before photography.

I adore Greg’s style! I just love how Greg becomes so familiar with the talent he’s working with so quickly, almost like a relationship you would have with a close friend. Someone you can be authentically you around & let your guard down with. His work shows another, often relaxed, expressive & fun side to his subjects. It’s just these subjects are the likes of Daniel Craig, Gary Oldman, Lady Gaga, Tom Hardy, Ana De Armas, Dakota Johnson, John Boyega, Robert Downey Jr., Dua Lipa, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Cynthia Erivo, Cate Blanchett, Quentin Tarantino, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Jonny Depp, Matt Damon, Meryl Streep & so on & so on. It’s totally mindblowing!

Unlike popular belief in today’s ‘instant’ world Greg was no overnight success story. He spent most of his career unrecognised until only in the last decade building up to being the photographer of superstars. He’ll tell you as much himself if you one day get to meet him. He’s a testament to the qualities it takes to be exceptional, hard work, relentless & building networks. I have endless admiration & respect for you Mr Williams! It’s a humble reminder that good things are built with time & knowledge. See you around!

 Check out his work here.

RANKIN

Celebrity portrait, fashion & commercial campaign photographer, music video & film director, television judge & presenter, publisher, published author & campaigner.

His work has converted the front page of the likes of Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Vanity Fair, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stones, Dazed, AnOther & Hunger. Time & time again!

He’s appeared on TV judging numerous photography shows, as well as on Next Top Model UK & Germany.

Rankin’s public name came mostly from his world-famous portrait sessions with cultural icons, politicians, royalty, musicians, film & sports stars of their time. He has worked in studio with the likes of The late HRH Queen Elizabeth II, HRH King Charles, Zara Phillips; Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Mikhail Gorbachev; Adele, Lily Allen, Iggy Azalea, Azealia Banks, Björk, David Bowie, Miles Cyrus, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Eminem, Future, Liam & Noel Gallagher, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Kelis, Jay-Z, Madonna, Kylie Minotaur, Rita Ora, The Rolling Stones, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, U2, Florence Welch, Will.I.am,; Monica Bellucci, Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Ricky Gervais, Hugh Grant, Scarlett Johansson, Lindsay Lohan, Jude Law, Sienna Miller, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Spacey, Emma Watson, Kate Winslet; Gisela Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, David Gandy, Winnie Harlow, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kendall Jenner, Heidi Kluuvikatu, Kate Moss; Lewis Hamilton, LeBron James, Damien Hirst, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood,

He’s directed music videos for artists including Rita Ora, Kelly Rolland, Tinie Tempah, Miley Cyrus, Kelis & Tove Lo.

Hired by the biggest brands in the world such as Aston Martin, Diesel, Dove, H&M, Hugo Boss, L’Oreal, Levi’s, M&S, Mercedes-AMG, Nike, Unilever, Guinness, Rommel, Rolls-Royce, Samsonite.

And with social causes so close to Rankins heart, he has given his time to shoot campaigns for; Women’s Aid campaign to highlight female domestic violence, HIV/AIDS campaign to raise awareness of both, Plastic waste campaign for Surfrider Foundation, and supported many other campaigns and charities he personal cares about including; the NHS, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Amnesty International, Institute of Cancer Research, Oxfam, MacMillan, Teenage Cancer Trust, Breast Cancer Awareness & The Big Issue.

Safe to say there is nothing Rankin has not done & can not do in photography or with light & a camera.

This wonderful human is not only someone I greatly admire, respect & am inspired by in the world of photography; but I’ve also learned a great deal from him over the past few years! Working with him in the studio & learning from him online.

Rankin is a true innovator & rule-breaker. A cultural icon in editorial photography. His work has this unique quality, its high gloss, impactful & impossible to ignore. I not only greatly admire the man behind the lens, but also the stunning career he has made for himself! When nobody would hire him, he created his own path & made others wish they had said yes!

I’ve hanged out with Rankin a few times in the past few years & it’s impossible not to love this guy & what he stands for. His values & attitude are second to none. He taught me to be a student of light. How to draw out an honest reaction out of your subject, how to get a glimpse into the soul & being of your subject. How to allow them to embrace their identity in front of a camera & shine. And how to create some truly iconic & timeless masterpieces.

I’ve worked with Rankin in the studio, studied under him & had a chance to learn what it takes to be a world-class photographer. The thought process, The perspective. The art of storytelling.

SAM DOCKER

One of the biggest names in UK Wedding Photography with an extensive list of awards & publications in prestigious global magazine brands such as Vogue & Harpers Bazaar. Sam has built a highly successful photography business over the last decade & become an internationally recognised photographer with his own signature style.

I initially merely knew of the Range Finder Rising Star out of Derby, that is Sam Docker & later on, I became familiar friends with this great human being. I first heard stories of admiration about his work whilst I was studying under the team at The Trained Eye on their year-long Wedding Photography Academy.  Sam’s journey was a source of inspiration from the start of my business & a model for growth which I aspired to follow. A few years later, I was lucky enough to study under Sam & even visit his studio for workshops & photoshoots. For me, not only is Sam such a down-to-earth, talented & genuinely lovely guy, his eye for design & detail in everything he does in his business mirrors my own pursuit for that dreamy state of impossible perfection. We share a passion for excellence & for offering immense value to our clients in every way we can! Style & substance both matter equally to us!

Check out Sam’s work here.

JOHN DOLAN

With over 30 years in the wedding photography industry; cited thousands of times in every global fashion magazine you can think of from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue; John is the godfather of wedding photography.

John has spent much of his career being selected by the biggest celebrity clients of their time. The likes of Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Martha Stewart, & many more have hand picked John as the trusted eye to capture their wedding celebrations; and that is just some of the names he is able to publically share. More recently, John was asked to be the official photographer for US President Joe Biden’s daughter’s wedding, and he had exclusive access to capture events from the White House.

I first met John in Vienna in 2022 & was initially oblivious to him or his work. I remember embarrassingly asking him frankly, “Sorry, but I don’t know who you are”. We can laugh at it now. You can’t say I’m not honest.

I could see how excited my fellow photographers were just being in his presence, and having time to speak to him 1-2-1 I could tell he was full of wisdom & I soaked it all up like a sponge. He taught me a lot about mindset & to “embrace the imperfect” when it comes to weddings. He has such a poetic eye for storytelling. He also taught me the value of trust between client & photographer. If you learn to trust in your photographer, as John says “amazing things happen”. We have kept in contact since & the more I learn, the more I grow to admire John!

Check out John’s work here.

ANNI GRAHAM

One of the most internationally recognised Wedding Photographers, based out of the United States. Her legendary talent has taken her across the globe & seen her amass hundreds of thousands of devoted followers who take great inspiration from her style & unique approach. Anni centres her approach to storytelling around the power of feelings, with an emotive & empathic style.

I first met Anni a few years ago & as you can see from this picture, we got on like the proverbial “house on fire”. We connected on more levels than I could imagine, especially on values & how we lead with our emotions & heart in our work. We bumped into each other backstage shortly after her keynote speech at one of the biggest international wedding conferences in the world. And of course, she had the whole audience on their feet with a standing ovation, or some still on the floor crying their eyes out with emotion. The good & beautiful kind of tears of joy & pure hearted positivity. It speaks to the kind of warm & wonderful human being she is.

I strongly believe that this is what distinguishes between ‘ a photographer’ & a truly exceptional photographer. The latter feels the moments, they read a story & a scene with their heart. Photography isn’t so much a job for them, but a calling. A passion which comes naturally to them!

Check out Anni’s work here.

STEVEN BARTLETT

Entrepreneur, Speaker, Investor, Author, Dragon on BBC Dragon’s Den & host of one of Europe’s biggest podcasts ‘The Diary of a CEO’.

Followed by millions around the world, Steven is arguably one of the most successful young people in the UK today!

For what Steven doesn’t know about photography or weddings, he certainly makes up for what he knows about business & about offering value to a market. I was fortunate to be invited backstage to meet with him before the start of his speaking series in 2024.

I won’t go into too many details from our private 30-minute conversation but he took a great interest in Ian Kugler Photography and was seriously impressed by my vision & ambition. In his words “You’re talented beyond your own realisation”. Like Steven, I aim to serve & offer exceptional value to clients! I don’t want you to simply like what I offer, I want you to love it! I extensively research, product test, & aim for outstanding quality; in service & product.

From our conversation, we found we shared far more than just a passion for business & strategic growth. We shared struggles earlier on in life which drive us to overachieve in life, a relatable origin story & that we were born only a month apart. Steven is a great & down to heart guy. I have all the time in the world for him! Thank you Steven for your support & belief in the vision for Ian Kugler Photography.
